June 14th Thoughts

I enjoyed the smattering of technology ideas presented by our groups this morning.  Graphic novels, smart boards, podcasting, and imovie information and ideas were presented.  I am especially interested in podcasting.  Recording my choirs, soloists, and student compositions and putting those files on my website is an exciting idea, one that I can see my students being fascinated with.

I also enjoyed the diversity in the movies that everyone in the class created.  There was everything from book reading, to home movies, art history instruction, and comedy. Each person’s movie reflected their personality.

June 13th Reflection

Today I was introduced into the land of found poems.  Very intriguing.  I like the idea of using song lyrics in place of lines from poems, though.  I was part of a group that helped brainstorm lyrics to use.  I think it will definitely help hesitant student poets get started writing poetry.

Mary Lee was kind enough to ask me to present “On the Sill”.  I love watching and listening to my audience as they become acquainted with Granny through my story.  She was an original.  Even though I don’t teach triadic writing to any of my students, I hope my colleagues came away with some good ideas as to how they could incorporate this type of writing into their classrooms.

June 12th Lessons Learned

I scratched the surface of blogging again today.  Peering deeper into this technology, and beneath my pre-conceived notions of blogging, I’ve learned that it may be possible, as an administrator, to control posts and comments in a blog, thus eliminating the fear of written catastrophe.  As an administrator, I may be able to delete anyinappropriate comments before they actually appear in the blog.

Since I am the weenie in my “Podcast” inquiry group, I delegated to myself the duty of researching the educational purposes of podcasting.  The possibilities of podcasting open up opportunities for distance learning and challenged learners, however I view it as yet another tool that can be utilized, not as a replacement for the natural school setting.

Blog Thoughts

I am approaching blogging with a considerable amount of skepticism.  In the perfect world, the concept opens the door for the exchange of free, in-depth, and intriguing dialogue.   At its best, it allows for the educational, mind stretching exchange of ideas.  However, in its mediocrity, it is simply another assignment to complete using the required number of words or sentences.  Grossly, a puke bucket for regurgitating what was force fed.  It is meaningless, useless, and a chore for all involved.  At its worst, blogging can target a person, ruin a reputation, or even threaten one’s well-being – all accomplished on a public form.  These detrimental actions can be warned against, but not prevented.  The damage can only be controlled.

At this point in time, one would have to convince or require me to utilize blogging in my classroom.  It is not something that I am comfortable with in the face of the risks involved.
